Promotion of natural multilingualism
Multilingualism means that a person can speak or write more than one language.
Many pupils grow up speaking several languages. More than a third of children already know more than one language when they start school. They learn languages in the family, with friends or through their environment. All children then learn another foreign language at school. In this way, all pupils become multilingual.
This linguistic diversity is a good thing. The school should make use of it and continue to promote it.
This means:
- The language of origin should be retained.
- New languages should be learned well.
Good language skills are important for success at school. They also help you to cope well in your job and everyday life later on.
Multilingualism is good for understanding between different cultures. It also strengthens the children's personality and self-confidence.
In our global world, multilingualism is becoming increasingly important - even at work.
The European Union has a goal:
Everyone in the EU should be able to speak two languages in addition to their mother tongue.
