Carnival is an important cultural event for many people. But as in all social areas, racism and discrimination also occur here. With racist costumes and cultural appropriation, racist images are perpetuated and make it difficult for some children and young people to participate in the festivities.
So how can Carnival be celebrated in a way that is anti-racist in the context of education?
Together, we want to explore the concept of cultural appropriation in the workshop, its meaning and the possible consequences of cultural appropriation. Using historical and current examples, we ask ourselves:
- How can we recognize racist reproduction at Carnival?
- What practical action options can we develop for schools and educational institutions?
The workshop will be held in German.
Target group: The workshop is open to educational professionals, teachers, (school) social workers, and anyone else who is interested, whether they have experienced racism themselves or not.
The workshop is being conducted by the Anti-Discrimination Office Cologne, a counseling, qualification and networking center focusing on racism, under the auspices of the public organization Öffentlichkeit gegen Gewalt e. V.
Registration: until at the latest 25.10.26 under https://kurzlinks.de/6a1g
The workshop is limited to 16 places.
