PROMPT! In the International Support Class
The PROMPT! language support project was launched in 2014. The City of Cologne, the German Red Cross and the University of Cologne launched it together.
The aim was to help children and young people in emergency accommodation to learn German. During their stay there, they were to be given access to language support and other educational opportunities.
Students at the University of Cologne who want to become teachers later on teach children and young people aged 6 to 18. The children and young people receive individual support. This makes it easier for them to start school.
PROMPT! in schools
PROMPT! has also been available at schools in Cologne since 2017. Student teachers help in so-called preparatory classes or international support classes. There, they support the teachers in supporting newly arrived pupils.
This school project has been organized together with the Cologne Municipal Integration Centre (KI) since 2018. The project was created because schools need more support in order to provide good support for newly immigrated pupils.
As part of the project, the student teachers complete an internship and work at around 34 schools in Cologne. Around 400 pupils are supported individually or in small groups in learning German.
What does the Municipal Integration Center (KI) do?
The KI organizes meetings for teachers and school social workers from participating schools. This allows them to exchange ideas and network.
At the University of Cologne, the Center for Teacher Education is responsible for supporting the students and coordinating the participating schools:
